My grandfather’s suicide was my intro to small business. It was 1993…I was 12 years old. And my Papa killed himself because of owning a small business and pressure with money. I remember thinking…I’ll never have debt. I’ll never let things like business ruin my life. I’ll be different. 24 years later I found myself in a Starbucks after selling a business for millions. I was talking to a friend about how I was so unhappy and my life was falling apart. All my relationships were on the rocks. I had money but nothing else. For 14 months, I had friends help me get back on my feet. I attended counseling weekly. And I started the process to caring more about significance than success. In the midst of all of this…We launched our 4th company called Gravy. But before I started it, I needed to have a bigger purpose than just making money. I didn’t need to work financially. So I needed a something deeper…I built what I call: Owners Intent This would be the driving force of why we would do everything we do at Gravy. My owners intent is:To build a company my adult children would want to work at someday if they chose to. Essentially, I wanted to build a company of scale that had a culture I would be proud for my kids to work in. Now Gravy has 150 team members around the world. And we say…“Gravy is a leadership development company disguised in the payment space.” I wake up daily and think about how to develop leaders. We want people to leave better leaders than they come into Gravy. And part of this leadership culture is killer content that can help you advance further, faster.
