Lisa Trapani Shumate

I serve as the Associate Vice President of Houston Public Media and Executive Director of the Houston Public Media Foundation. Houston Public Media is licensed to the University of Houston. HPM delivers trusted content across television, radio, and digital channels with local news, public affairs, and educational programming for children and adults. Our programming partners include PBS, NPR, and American Public Television. I've been in this role since 2011. I am responsible for a $20MM operating budget and raising capital funds as needed. I oversee a staff of 90 that is focused on expanding our presence in the digital media landscape. Strong ties to Houston's business community, educational institutions, and arts organizations are vital to our existence and our mission. We're fortunate to live and work in Houston which has the diversity and opportunity of a large market and the warmth of a small town. Houston is generous and resilient. So is Houston Public Media. When Hurricane Harvey destroyed the studios of KHOU-11, Houston's CBS station, Houston Public Media created space for their entire news and technical operations for 18 months until they could find a new home. During the pandemic Houston Public Media created a new daily talk show to answer listener questions about everything from quarantine to vaccines. We also added educational programming on television and online resources for teachers and parents working to educate children from home. Before joining Houston Public Media, I worked in management positions at commercial media outlets KHOU/TEGNA and KTRK/Disney-ABC where I lead departments responsible for revenue, marketing, community affairs, and government relations. I've been an active member of the Executive Women's Partnership of the GHP since 2012, and a founding member of the Women's Business Alliance. I've served on 3 national governing boards over the past 6 years and I continue to serve at the national level in public media. I am an experienced speaker and contributing author to a textbook used at universities in the United States and Canada, published by Wiley, called "You Got This! The Real Skills You Need for Career Success."
