Akbar Meirio is an international development practitioner, specialising on international relations, disaster management and M&E, with more than 14 years work experience in international development programmes. He has outstanding knowledge, skills and experience in international relations, disaster management and also in designing development programmes (using both Theory of Change and Logical Framework approach), developing M&E Framework/Plan and implementing it. In addition, he also has extensive knowledge and skills in knowledge management, reporting, and social research. He is currently working as a Senior Officer for Disaster Management at the ASEAN Secretariat where he is responsible for managing activities to strengthen the capacity of ASEAN in disaster management, including in monitoring and evaluating the implementation of ASEAN Agreement on Disaster Management and Emergency Response (AADMER) Work Plan for 2021-2025. Previously, he was a Senior Officer for External Relations Division 3 at the ASEAN Secretariat. He also used to work at two Australia's DFAT funded programs in Indonesia, namely Knowledge Sector Initiative and MAHKOTA. He also worked for several years at the United Nations Development Programme in Indonesia, dealing with the issues of conflict prevention and peace building, disaster management and environment. Under the assignment of the UNDP, he produced the report of final evaluation of Art Gold Indonesia (AGI) Programme and the report of final evaluation of Safer Community through DRR in Aceh (DRR-A) Programme. With the UNDP Indonesia, in collaboration with other team members he developed the world's first national-level Post-Disaster Needs Assessment Guidelines in Indonesia, combining both Damages and Losses Assessment (DALA) and Human Recovery Needs Assessment (HRNA) methodologies. Akbar Meirio was also a researcher and writer of the world's first bilateral truth commission, i.e. The Commission of Truth and Friendship between Indonesia and Timor Leste. He was also a research fellow at the Documentation Center of Cambodia where he carried out a research on Transitional Justice and Reconciliation Process in Cambodia.
