Alfred Maelicke

Was key founder of the company His background is a PhD in Chemistry, and additional education in Biology and Medicine. Following postdoctoral research at the Max Planck Institute (MPI) for Experimental Medicine in Goettingen, he joined the faculty of the Rockefeller University at New York as Associate Professor. There he began working on nicotinic receptors and neurotoxins. After his return to Germany, he became Head of the Max Planck Society's research unit “Intercellular Communication” at the MPI in Dortmund. From 1989 to his retirement in 2003, he was Professor of Biochemistry and Department Head at the University of Mainz Medical School, his research focusing on molecular and cellular aspects of brain development and degeneration, and on drug development for Alzheimer’s disease. In parallel, from 1992 to 2011, he was faculty member of the Department of Pharmacology and Experimental Therapy of the University of Maryland Medical School at Baltimore/MD. From 2000 to 2003, he acted as CSO of Biofrontera, a biotechnology company focusing on gene expression analysis in neurological diseases. In 2005, he founded Galantos Genetics and GalantosPharma. Maelicke has interacted with pharmaceutical industry since the 1980ies and was member of the Consecutive Board of the German Chemical Industry Association.
