Ben Leggett

As a BSc Mathematics graduate from the University of Southampton, I have gained a rounded understanding of the statistical field, including techniques and use of statistical packages. In the module Communicating and Researching Mathematics, for which I received a grade of 85, I utilised Stata 14 to develop log linear models, estimating the number of deaths that occurred during the Kosovo killings. I have further developed my practical understanding of databases in my current role within the Data and Information Team at Hampshire County Council. In particular I implemented my self-taught SQL skills to produce numerous reports and fulfil data requests for a range of stakeholders. It has been vital that the data is as user-friendly and accessible for stakeholders of all technical levels. This has supplemented the work of our partner organisation, Hampshire Futures. To ensure that they provide their service efficiently, I attend monthly meetings with the management team, reflecting on the progress of their current key performance indicators. I also deal with data requests from upper management, generating statistics using internal data to help secure bids and provide feedback to funders. I am keen to develop my proficiency in statistical packages beyond my current role as a Junior Data Information Analyst. For instance, I have used Data Camp to undertake Data Science in R courses in order to expand my programming and statistical modelling skills. By undertaking these courses, I have gained a greater understanding of how to visualise data and perform statistical analysis. I believe my motivation to learn beyond the task at hand would make me an invaluable asset to any team.
