I have a exceedingly wide breadth of experience from time spent in IT consultancy/security to my current background in Cutting-edge Service Provider networks, focusing primarily on IP/MPLS deployment, scaling and development. While my background is primarily Networking, my focus and passion lately has been revolving around combining my experience building/running/designing IP/MPLS networks with some of the emerging Systems/DevOps technologies. These include horizontally scalable Distributed Object-based Storage, high volume log management/storage and streaming event processing tools. I'm striving to instrument our networks/systems to get the most agile and high-value information correlation possible. There is so much analytic value we are just throwing away by not having either the granularity (RRDtool with 5min polling is, and has been insufficient for quite some time) or the visibility (context/visualisation). As a network operator I see this as a large weakness; is my passion and focus right now. All the while learning/evangelizing using Orchestration, containerization and Datacenter resource management tools to make things scalable and repeatable. Technologies I'm currently heavily working with: Cisco IP/MPLS/BGP/DWDM, Python (for developing tools to fill information or resource gaps), Ceph, Logstash/ElasticSearch, Ansible, Juju/MAAS, Prometheus/Grafana, Docker, Mesos/Marathon/Chronos, SNMP/Netflow among others.
