Brooke Barnhizer

I am employed at Sargent & Lundy as a Drafter II and Physical Designer in training. I am a member of a Substation design team in the Power Delivery Service business group. I perform varying duties in the design and drawing of substation projects. I am interested in returning to the construction industry because it is aligned with my professional goals. I completed a 13-month job for Baker Concrete and am eager add more field experience to my design and drafting knowledge. During my employment at Baker I was both in the corporate office and on site and was exposed to a variety of phases of the design and building process. This experience allowed me to develop skills specifically in the area of AutoCAD—Construction Documents such as 3-D Models, As Built Drawings, Fabrication Drawings and many more. I was able to go into the field and inspect work in progress and see the drawings become a reality. This work experience motivated me to want to continue my education in the field of construction. With my degree in Architecture from Ball State University focusing in Environmental Design I completed extensive studies on the topics of conservation and environmental sustainability. This experience was cap-stoned by the semester I spent studying abroad with the College of Architecture and Planning. We traveled to various countries throughout Europe and Asia and also Egypt and the United Arab Emirates. The main focus of our study was observing structural design, and I realized the value of my mathematical mind and attention to detail. I previously lived in Madrid, Spain teaching English to professionals. This cultural experience has provided a deeper understanding of not only language, but also the flexibility necessary to succeed in today’s global economy. I have learned much about myself and my ability to adjust to different environments. I feel this job experience will enrich me as I continue to interact with diverse participants in the field of construction.
