A long time ago I had a two-year stint performing alternate service work as a CO. I hadn't gotten to that place by mistake but I was cutting stone, laying up block, building foundation for what was to follow. My career has been somewhat conventional (some time in the position, then a promotion, etc.) except for those two times I resigned from stable, established positions to go work at struggling organizations. The red thread (think argyle sock) that has run through my career and life is one of helping people participate and foster partnership for positive change. This has been true from my camp counselor days, at the Red Cross striving to meet patient blood needs, building a national registry of unrelated marrow donors, supporting people in poverty to gain knowledge and skills to change their circumstance, supporting at-risk youth in their efforts to do the same, and currently helping a slow-moving system make significant change. I try to be kind, humored, focused on meeting objectives and to find ways to serve the customer or to serve those directly serving the customer. Often, I succeed. Sometime I miss. Always, I listen.
