Carina Fischer, PhD

Thank you for visiting my profile. A little bit about myself. I recently finished my doctoral studies in medical sciences at Karolinska Institute. Aim of my studies was to understand vascular related growth factors in cancer and metabolic disease. This position provided me with 6 years of hands on experience in preclinical research. My daily routines were project management, scientific data generation, analysis and presentation, medical writing (ethical and grant applications, articles, book chapters) and teaching of undergraduates. In a truly international environment, I developed strong communication and problem-solving skills and am now confident to work with people in various positions from all over the world in a highly efficient manner. In Austria, I completed my bachelor studies in engineering at the IMC University of Applied Sciences. Focus of this program was to understand all aspects of medical and pharmaceutical biotechnology with extensive courses in GxP, drug regulatory affairs, pharmacovigilance, quality assurance, business administration, cost accounting and controlling, marketing and European law. My master’s program at the University of Vienna provided me with intense practical training in techniques such as cloning, array analysis, tissue imaging, cell culture and animal models. While studying I was really interested in getting hands on experience and worked in diverse laboratories with focus on liver cancer, autoimmune skin diseases, obesity and diabetes. Working with many individuals and in different research areas was both exciting and challenging and helped me develop the ability to work organized and productive both individually and in teams. In the laboratory I am known for my positive attitude, out of the box thinking, a thick protocol folder and my often almost childish optimism. In my free time I love to go climbing, play board games or be creative with our laser engraver/cutter.
