About

Software developer with computer systems Ph.D After obtaining a Master of Science degree in a computer science top masters programme at the Vrije Universiteit in Amsterdam, I continued as a Ph.D student under the supervision of Andrew Tanenbaum. The focus of my Ph.D research was on improving the reliability of the operating system storage stack. During my Ph.D work, I have obtained extensive experience in inventing, collaborating on, developing, implementing, and evaluating new concepts and techniques. It has also taught me about scientific writing and convincing others that my new insights are valuable: I have published and presented all parts of my research as papers at international conferences. During my time at the university, I have become involved in working on the university's open source operating system, MINIX3. Over the course of the last decade, I have made significant contributions to the MINIX3 project, mostly in my own time. My work on MINIX3 has given me experience in programming operating systems, writing substantial amounts of C code, maintaining a large code base mostly written by others, as well as the organizational side of co-managing an open source project, working as part of a larger team, and cooperating with outside contributors and other open source projects. During all these activities, I have proven to be able to set and achieve short-term goals, often under considerable time pressure, while at the same time keeping long-term goals in mind. I take the time to listen to people, and I set high professional standards for myself and the people around me. I exercise the utmost precision and patience in order to deliver solid work, I find great satisfaction in creating (re)usable software building blocks, and I have a strong sense of responsibility regarding my previous works. Interests: Operating systems, microkernels; Dependability, reliability, fault tolerance; File and storage systems; Networking; Virtualization, containers; Security.
