My passion and determination for trying to find solutions to problems, led me to change my career from a High School Science Teacher to a Software Engineer. Even though I had a secure position as a tenured teacher, I decided to resign from my position so that I could earn a degree in computer science. I was inspired to pursue this career change because a friend of mine, who was working as a software engineer, described computer science as “the science of solving problems.” This description, appealed to my analytical and logical nature. Although, I liked many aspects of teaching science, such as working with my students and fellow colleagues, I found myself hankering for opportunities to solve logical-based problems. As an example, of this desire, I voluntarily took some math classes at the county college, while I was still teaching. I also started to play online chess and found myself, trying to solve puzzles, such as those contained in “Brain Game” books. Thus, when my friend told me about computer science, it seemed like it could be my calling. As a teacher, I had many opportunities to develop and utilize my soft skills, but not my hard skills. For this reason, I wanted to enroll in a technical university where I would be immersed in courses that would provide me plenty of opportunities to develop technical skills. Hence, the reason why I chose to attend The New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT). Now that I have graduated from NJIT and earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in Computer Science with a minor in Applied Mathematics, I can now say that I have developed my hard skills to a level that is commensurate with my soft skills. I have gained experienced through the many programming assignments and projects that I completed for my coursework, I am seeking a full-time position that is related to software in general and or software engineering/development in particular. During this process of searching and interviewing for a position, I will be practicing and enhancing my technical skills.
