About
Ellen M. Callinan started her professional career at the Washington law firm of Crowell & Moring, where she served as Legislative Librarian, Manager of Research Services and Webmaster from 1985 to 2000. She joined the library staff at the E. B. Williams Law Library as Web Services Coordinator in 2001 and became Digital Development Librarian in 2002. Ellen was an adjunct professor at Georgetown Law from 1999 to 2010 where she taught a three-credit course on law firm research and management. As a Senior Consultant with Axelroth & Associates, Ellen conducted library assessments, recommended structural improvements and designed new systems to enhance services. She joined Arnold & Porter as its interim Library Director in May 2016 and became Co-Director of Research Services in December 2016.Ellen also has extensive experience in designing and teaching legal research programs, including training for the D.C. Bar, Practicing Law Institute, and the Institute for Continuing Legal Education, as well as clients, attorneys and staff. Ellen founded the Research Instruction Caucus, an AALL coalition of academic and private sector librarians, created the National Legal Research Teach-In, an annual event held every April since 1993, and edited the AALL response to the MacCrate Report entitled, "Core Legal Research Competencies." She has lectured throughout the United States and in Australia on legal research training, has written numerous articles on the topic, and was on the editorial board of Perspectives: Teaching Legal Research and Writing (West) for nine years. Ellen received her B.A. summa cum laude from Trinity College, her J.D. from the College of William & Mary, and her M.S.L.S. with honors from the Catholic University of America.Specialties: Library management, staff development, strategic planning, technology design, research training, and library assessment
