About

Committed to innovation and excellence in learning and teaching, but especially fired up by a desire to make finding and understanding legal information as straightforward and painless as possible. Experienced in teaching legal research and foundation legal skills. Skilled in community-building, working within the academic and legal community. Creator of the Lawbore website for law students, and proud to have kept things fresh on this front since 2003. Law, technology and teaching are my passions, and these usually combine in the services I develop. The Learnmore part of Lawbore offers students down-to-earth, approachable guidance in legal skills via different types of media. Future Lawyer, the site's careers blog includes interviews with alumni, event reviews and advice pieces. My experience in engaging students, making complex information accessible and designing online resources has lead me (without realising it!) down the path of legal design. My work in this sphere can be seen via the tldr.legal website where I work in collaboration with students, lawyers, illustrators and graphic artists to communicate the law in new ways. Always at the heart is legal design and visualisation in legal education. The first legal design sprint was held at the Cass Business School (part of City) in July 2018, which I co-organised with Justis. I have been involved in legal research training to various organisations; as a CILIP Onsite Trainer, and also for the Justis Academy series. I was named a National Teaching Fellow of the Higher Education Academy in 2013 and a Senior Fellow in 2018. Author of: The Insider’s Guide to Legal Skills (Routledge, 2016) & Elliott & Quinn’s English Legal System (19th & 20th edn, Pearson, 2018, 2019). Took over Legal Research: the Practitioner's Handbook from Peter Clinch for the 3rd edn, which published in 2019 (Wildy). Interests: Legal research, teaching, higher education, creation of learning resources, visualisation & legal design Member of Clarity, the Association of Law Teachers (ALT), Society of Legal Scholars (SLS), British and Irish Association of Law Librarians (BIALL) and the Chartered Institute of Library and Information Professionals (CILIP).
