About
At Oklahoma State University I pursued degrees in architectural design and architectural engineering as a result of my interest in providing a wholistic approach to the design of the built environment. The Architecture studios coupled with the structural analysis courses from the Architectural Engineering program forged a strong work ethic and a research-based design philosophy. After graduating I began working as a structural design engineer at Dewberry Inc. In Tulsa, Oklahoma. My time there enabled me to realize my passion for structural engineering and for collaborating with architects, interior designers, engineers, construction managers, and clients. As a mentee to Andrew Stuart I was able to learn about the various codes that facilitate and guide our work as well as how to communicate and work more fluidly with other disciplines. After two years there, I decided to embark upon a new journey. The move from from structural engineer to Peace Corps volunteer might seem strange, but every step of the way I have been involved in STEM and educationally oriented activities outside of school and work. My desire to learn is paralleled by my desire to teach, provide, and contribute, and after years of working with elementary, middle, and high school students – I decided to volunteer as a teacher with the Peace Corps. In order to be successful in that position I had to realize my potential to be a “self-starter” and work without guidance. I had to become an ambassador and leader in a place where I was unfamiliar with the culture and context where I lived and worked. My ability to collaborate and communicate was tested and strengthened through that experience and ultimately showed me the importance of taking ownership of and responsibility for the work that I produce.
