I am a Patient Resource Specialist (PRS) at The American Cancer Society assisting people with their fight against cancer. One of my main goals as a PRS is to remove barriers to treatment. By working directly with cancer patients, I am an immediate witness to the unique struggles cancer patients face. In addition to removing barriers to treatment, I aim to address the emotional demands of fighting cancer. In fulfilling my role as a PRS, it has become evident that cancer can inflict anyone. Beyond the basis of race, gender, and age it is important to realize that cancer does not distinguish between the served and underserved members of society. Barriers to treatment take many forms including, financial need, transportation to treatment appointments, and health insurance vulnerability. My goal is to work with patients to remove these barriers so they are better positioned to fight cancer. The role of a PRS offers a unique opportunity to work with cancer patients from all walks of life. It is through this work that I get a closer a look at the struggles cancer patients face. Whether it’s assisting with emotional support or tackling the appearance-related side effects, I aim to address the various forms the needs of cancer patients present themselves. As a PRS for the American Cancer Society, I am allowed the opportunity to sharpen my empathetic skills. These skills allow me to recognize the unique struggles patients face to better equip them with the tools they need to fight back cancer.
