About

Erik Carlson is a multi-media artist, composer and designer based in Providence, RI. His public art installations and audio compositions examine the ways we interact with our built and natural environments, closely examining the intersection of light, sound and physical space. Carlson began incorporating video and light elements into his work in 2004, and expanded his field to include interactive objects and installations, public art and site-specific performance, frequently collaborating with architects, poets and photographers. Since 2010, he has been leading the small, Providence, RI based public art studio AREA C projects, along with frequent collaborator Erica Carpenter. Together they have completed permanent public art installations in Boulder, Chapel Hill, San Diego, Nashville, Denver and Dubai, among others locations. In 2009, Carlson received the MacColl-Johnson Fellowship in music composition from the Rhode Island Foundation. He has composed scores for several documentary films, including "Witness: Katrina," an Emmy-award winning feature-length film for the National Geographic Channel, and "Town Hall" for iTVS's American ReFramed series on PBS. His permanent public sound installation (Low Rez/Hi Fi, a collaboration with architect Meejin Yoon) can be viewed at 1110 Vermont Avenue in Washington DC. Low Rez/Hi Fi was also featured in the Cooper-Hewitt National Design Museum "Design Life Now Triennial." From 2001 - 2007, Carlson was an associate at the award-winning firm SsD Architecture, during which time they received Metropolis Magazine's "Next Generation Prize" for their Big Dig Building.
