Esraa Salem

I'm a biomedical engineer who's most passionate about improving people's lives and the health care industry through innovation and creative thinking. I believe in the power of scientific research in providing solutions to the challenges facing the medical field all around the world. I'm specifically interested in developing resource constraint solutions to increase the health care accessibility and availability to the communities and populations affected by health disparities. I've worked as an undergraduate research assistant at the Regenerative Biomaterials Laboratory at the University of Arkansas. I've worked on investigating the use of biomaterials in the treatment of damaged muscle. This experience has given me the opportunity to learn and perform some of the most important techniques that are needed in a biomedical engineering lab such as cell culture, imaging techniques, ELISA, BCA assay, etc. I've also interned at Endeavor NWA, a non-profit organization that supports high impact entrepreneurs and help them scale up and expand their market. Through this experience, I've enriched my business background and gained hands-on experience in the non- profit and entrepreneurship sectors which I think is essential to success in any industry. Last summer, I did a research internship at one of Egypt's most reputable research institutions, Zewail City of Science and Technology. During this internship, I was introduced to microbiological research techniques and worked along with a team on aquaporins expression in HeLa cells. Through my research experience in both institutions, I got to develop my critical thinking skills and learn more about the challenges facing the biomedical research worldwide. I'm a team person and have always believed in the power and potential a diverse team has. During my time at the University of Arkansas, I was involved with many on campus and off campus organizations and clubs. I served as the president of the International Students Organization (ISO) where I got to represent, along with the other board members, the international students community on campus and plan events to introduce the cultural diversity that we have on campus to all the U of A students.
