Dr. Fernando Lopes received his Ph.D. In Cell Biology from the Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais, Brazil under Dr. Vanessa Pinho researching the role of neutrophil-derived reactive oxygen species in the resolution of inflammation using a model of rheumatoid arthritis. While completing his postdoctoral training at the University of Calgary under the supervision of Dr. Derek McKay, he specialized in helminth-host immunological crosstalk in chronic inflammatory gastrointestinal diseases and arthritis. As an assistant professor at McGill University, he explored the role of helminth components in modulating the immunometabolism of immune cells to promote inflammation resolution in inflammatory diseases. Dr. Lopes also focused on characterizing the metabolic requirements for myeloid cells functions. Now at the Broad Institute of MIT and Harvard, he is studying host-pathogen interactions with the ultimate goal of helping patients with infectious diseases.
