Francesco Atzeni

I have completed my PhD studies in mathematical and computational modelling at the University of Zurich in October 2018. The focus of my PhD has been conceiving and implementing models of the mechanisms whereby biological tissues form their shapes during development. I addressed such phenomena developing a novel simulation framework (C++) which combines numerical algorithms for mechanical deformation with those for biochemical patterning. To control those numerical simulations and handle their input and output data, I designed a MATLAB application, with extensive simulation pre- and post-processing capabilities. The modelling approaches were conceived through close interaction with biologists and produced plenty of biologically relevant insight. Before my PhD, I attended an integrated Master's programme (Bachelor included) in Mathematics at the University of Warwick. There, I combined the core pure mathematics curriculum with several optional courses in algorithms, programming and modelling. I love sports (volleyball, football, and many more) and photography.
