World class health care is a phrase that is often used - but less often delivered. How can a patient receive the best care possible when it is difficult to access a service, services are not accessible, communication is poor, and providers don't collaborate and share best practice? The basic requirements of a service are too often ignored: keep it simple, use the best technology, great communication and feedback, share what works with your peers, and the removal of arbitrary barriers to ensure a service is sustainable. My mission at Specsavers is to overcome these barriers and ensure that patients can access their NHS eyecare in a location that they can easily get to - and help to ensure that avoidable sight loss is avoided. In my role of National Service Delivery Manager I work with a range of commissioners and organisations to develop and implement eye health services that make a difference to peoples lives, whilst also reducing the burden on our secondary care colleagues in an affordable and sustainable manner. Does this approach work? A 100% success rate in tenders, record numbers of new pathways implemented in our stores which have benefited nearly half a million patients last year isn't a bad start!!
