Throughout my time as a student (A-levels & University) I worked at NEXT distribution. During this period in the retail industry I learnt the real importance of meeting deadlines and forward planning. The main reason for this is that me and my colleagues often had to communicate between management, transport management team and drivers of the wagons. In order for the day to be successful, we had to assess the forecast for orders, check the road situations and load the wagons with stock. Working here and studying simultaneously helped me manage my time properly and even just working two days a week I was able to achieve the "make a difference" award, which was my warehouses' equivalent of employee of the month.At university I learnt a vast array of practical scientific techniques which include; variations of PCR, cell culture and green chemistry. Also, writing up experiments into a report format was a valuable skill I have gained from this experience.I have been a Laboratory technician for a year now where I have been able to further my microbiological skills in fast-paced environments. Where aseptic technique, initiative and scientific knowledge is invaluable throughout. Sample preparation, ISO regulated methods and bacterial confirmations are all aspects I have experience in, often testing for pathogens such as Salmonella Spp. And being able to confidently serotype these accurately.
