Senior researcher at Istituto Superiore di Sanità (National Institute of Health). Environmental virologist with over two decades of experience in the molecular characterization and epidemiology of enteric viruses, specifically hepatitis A and E viruses, enteroviruses, adenoviruses, noroviruses, polyomaviruses and other emergent viruses that may be present in contaminated water or food. She is an expert in the field of water and health, including risk analysis, and on molecular tools to identify and control emergent viruses in water environments. In recent years, she has been concentrating on Wastewater-Based Epidemiology for the surveillance of pathogenic human viruses, including SARS-CoV-2. She coordinates several research projects on the detection, quantification and molecular characterization of viral pathogens in environmental matrices, including the nationwide SARI project (Epidemiological Surveillance for SARS-CoV-2 in urban sewage).
