"That's not my job" - the phrase that bothers me the most when I hear it at work! That or some other variation of that phrase. I was brought up believing that while every job description says "And other duties and responsibilities as required", there is one thing missing: Come to work and be helpful! My family owned delis/convenience stores. Hence, I was destined to work every Saturday and Sunday since I was around 12 years old. While riding my bicycle was something that I would have much rather done during my formative years, that experience has definitely shaped me into the business conscious, results-orientated, and driven business partner that I am today. In hindsight, the weekends spent learning the business and dealing with customers was among the best things that ever happened to me. Early in my education I became fascinated by psychology but did not have an interest in the clinical side or doing research. Then I came upon a course in Industrial Psychology and that changed my career path for the better! While completing my Master's Degree at NYU in I/O Psychology, I entered the world of Human Resources and Organizational Development. This was the ideal path for me as I was able to incorporate the business lessons and acumen that I developed during those formative years with my education. So if we work together, please don't let me hear you say 'that' phrase... Let's all be helpful as we navigate this ever changing world!
