About

Ioannis has threefold background in Architecture, Engineering and Construction (AEC). He has built his multidisciplinary expertise through research projects and studies in Switzerland (ETH, EPFL), Netherlands (TUDelft) and Greece (AUTh). Fields that he has been passionate about include structural design, computational geometry, form generative and form finding design methods, optimization, digital fabrication, robotics, material science and design digitalization. The development of customized computational tools for CAD, CAE, or CAM, successfully allows him to combine the AEC sub-fields and explore new aspects, pipelines and come up with solutions. He pursues a future in which the built environment integrates high-end interdisciplinary technologies in a sophisticated way. In detail: In January 2022 Ioannis defended his PhD in Civil and Environmental Engineering at École polytechnique fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL). Prior to his doctoral studies, he worked as research assistant at Block Research Group (BRG) at ETH where he was intensively involved in the NEST HiLo shell roof project. Ioannis background includes a MAS (Master of Advanced Studies) in the Chair of Architecture and Digital Fabrication (Gramazio & Kohler Chair) at Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich (ETH), where he worked on the robotic fabrication of Catalan vaulting and robotically assembled timber truss systems. Additionally, Ioannis holds a MSc (Master of Science) in Building Technology from Delft University of Technology (TUDelft). There he specialized in Structural Mechanics and Design Informatics, delving into topology optimization processes and structural capacity of additive manufacturing (3D printing) of carbon-reinforced filaments, in an interdisciplinary research environment. During his thesis, he proposed an alternative, geometric topology optimization methodology applied to nodes of space frame structures. Ioannis’ first steps date back in Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (AUTh), in Greece, where from he graduated with a Diploma in Architectural Engineering.
