James Steenberg is an environmental scientist focusing on the ecology and sustainable management of both commercially managed forests and urban forests. He is the forest carbon and climate change analyst with the Nova Scotia Department of Lands and Forestry and is an adjunct professor at Dalhousie University's School for Resource and Environmental Studies, where he recently completed a Killam Postdoctoral Fellowship. His previous work has covered a wide variety of topics, including the intersections of government open data and environmental management with the Canadian Geospatial and Open Data Research Partnership (geothink.ca) and urban forest ecosystem services with the USDA Forest Service’s Northern Research Station while on a Fulbright exchange. James received his PhD from Ryerson University, which examined the vulnerability of the urban forest resource. As both an academic researcher and consultant, he has completed work for the Canadian Council of Forest Ministers, Alberta Energy Regulator, Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry, the City of Toronto, the City of Hamilton, and Halifax Water. He was also one of the developers of Halifax’s award-winning urban forest management plan.
