Have you ever noticed how hard it is to write the first line of an “About Me” section? Me too. So I’ll start by stating the obvious. I am Me. “Me” is a friend, a people champion, a leader, a role model, a fighter, a harmoniser, a teammate, a learner, a coach, and countless other things. “Me” values connection with other people and fairness above all else, and thankfully has strengths in compassion, courage and leadership to support my values. “Me” is also a patent attorney, which is a bit different to the rest of “Me” but harnesses my other core strengths in efficiency, detail orientation, decisiveness and common sense to deliver commercially pragmatic advice for clients. “Me” has over 20 years of experience of coordinating patent strategies across the world including work on prosecution, litigation, oppositions and due diligence. My practice concentrates on life sciences patenting across a broad range of areas all the way from A for Antibodies through to Z for Zoonosis (though I should admit my work technically stops at Y for Yeast). My focus over the last few years has been in technologies at the interface of biology & chemistry and RNA based medicaments. In addition, I have been developing a high level of specialist knowledge regarding IP in the rapidly growing Cannabis market and applying that on behalf of an increasing number of clients. I’m privileged to have been able to both publish and speak, in multiple countries, in order to share my expertise on European patents and Cannabis IP protection. “Me” is a long-time supporter of the Young Entrepreneurs Scheme (YES) and I have spent over 10 years judging the final because I enjoy supporting the next generation of scientists and entrepreneurs to look beyond research as an academic exercise “Me” is a good patent attorney but, cards on the table, “Me” is an even better human being. I try to use my values to support others, so they can be the best they can be while enjoying themselves even, NO, especially when at work. I also really care about normalising the conversation around mental health issues and setting healthy boundaries between work and home for everyone no matter seniority or success. And finally, “Me” is a passionate rugby supporter, petrol/EV-head, and most of all a huge geek. Give me something Disney, Star Wars or Marvel and I’ll be happy as the proverbial pig.
