I qualified as a Mental Health Nurse in 1977 and worked in various settings within this field. In 1994, I took on a role as a Unit trainer for manual handling as an adjunct to my Ward Sister role. In 1995, I undertook a Florence Nightingale Scholarship study tour to investigate the moves towards "No Lifting". A presentation was delivered at the end of the study to the sponsors of the scholarship at St Mary's in London. I moved into my first substantial manual handling post in 1999 before moving to Salford in 2002.
