I taught myself Basic in 1981 on an Apple II and I've been programming ever since - 35 years and some 20+ languages later. Professionally, I have been working as a full stack programmer for the past 20+ years (around 40,000 hours). I mainly work in Internet development in the LEMP/LAMP environment. My preferred setup currently is Centos7, Nginx, MariaDB, Redis and PHP. This includes use of JavaScript, CSS (SASS) and all the various support systems that go along with being a developer. My work involves not only the planning and design of our web code architecture, I also perform many sysadmin duties as well. This includes operations such as: server configurations, security analysis, version control, code rollout and decisions involving software systems used in all aspects. Currently my work has been focused on development and deployment in the Amazon AWS cloud-based compute environment. Cloud computing is a radical shift in architecture from that employed in the older monolithic datacenter structure. A whole new range of technologies, services and methodologies are made available. I prefer working on the back-end code. Pure data and process control. This aspect does not radically change over time and is where long term experience really counts, whereas front-end designers are constantly in flux to keep up with the new trends that spawn weekly. While I can handle items like responsive design, I really believe that is a younger programmers game. What have I done? Built shopping carts, classified ad systems, user accounting for 20 million, community portal, online calendars, survey systems, report generation, sales tracking, email templates - these are everyday tasks.
