Course work included introduction to criminal justice, criminology, and biology. My undergraduate career focused on gang courses, homicide courses and homeland security courses. Some examples of courses are International Security, Domestic Terrorism, Cyber Terrorism, Death Investigations, Homeland Security, And Seminar in Crime and Forensic Mental Health. In addition to traditional classroom research and learning offered through the Masters of Arts program at Arizona State University, I have also been trained in making important connections between criminal justice theories and on-the-ground security threats often encountered by civilians in conflict affected environments. This on-the-ground work further enhances my understanding of the powerful effects of crime and violence in the lives of everyday citizens. For example, my MA thesis research focused on development of a proposal to the San Diego Human Trafficking Task Force in my hometown of San Diego, CA. A fundamental component of the program was the development of a public service announcement (PSA) proposal targeting young women to educate them about the dangers of entering the sex trafficking trade, including ways to help them identify the warning signs of recruitment. In addition, the PSA aimed to target potential and active traffickers and facilitators to warn them of the punishment for offending and incentives to reintegration and rehabilitation programs. Finally, the PSA facilitated pathways to education for law enforcement officers and first responders on how to identify and distinguish acts of prostitution versus victims of sex trafficking.
