Kristen Tola

I'm passionate about cultural heritage, archaeology and interpretation. As a Heritage Consultant, I work with a team of consultants and archaeologists delivering heritage projects throughout NSW, QLD and WA. I have recent experience in Aboriginal and historical archaeology and excavations, the preparation of heritage impact statements, Aboriginal heritage due diligence assessment, community consultation and project management. I'm continuing to develop my skills in archaeology through professional practice and post-graduate research in community archaeology at Flinders University, South Australia. I draw on 15 years' experience working in both state and local government cultural institutions with many years of administration, financial management and stakeholder relationships. I worked with the Fort Scratchley Historical Society, supporting volunteer-led operation of Newcastle's premier tourist destination Fort Scratchley. I have assisted colleagues in local government projects such as Master Plans and Plans of Management, curated a display of moveable heritage items for The Store building, and advised on content for the Newcastle Heritage Strategy 2020-2030; a 10-year plan for the strategic management of heritage in Newcastle. My studies and research in Cultural Heritage previously centred around place heritage, interpretation and cultural landscapes. My Masters research in 2020 investigated the Historic Urban Landscape approach and its application for heritage conservation in urban management, and proclaimed the benefits for adoption and integration of the HUL concept into planning and urban development policies. I am also passionately involved in volunteer activities which include being an Assessor for the Keep Australia Beautiful Tidy Towns and Sustainable Cities programs, participating on the Board of Management for the Newcastle Historic Reserve Land Manager (The Lock-Up), and as Public Officer for local motorcycle rider group, Novocycle.
