As a physiotherapist and advocate for value-based healthcare, my goal is to be instrumental in transforming the musculoskeletal rehabilitative healthcare industry in South Africa to enable all patients to access affordable effective rehabilitation that enables them to return to work and life. My own practices are used to pilot VBHC programs with both the injury-on-duty and medical aid patients and in 2012, I, with two partners, formed a company called Workability to implement the piloted programs on a national scale. Workability has established, to date, a network of 60 independent musculoskeletal physiotherapy and occupational therapy practices that adhere to VBHC principles. By negotiating contracts with payers for the delivery of outcome-based care, we have been able to offer alternative reimbursement models for our network. Our self-developed IT-platform enables us to coordinate care, report data, quality assure outcomes and manage governance. The health, work and cost outcomes captured on the IT-platform were analysed in my recent masters. The ability to get all stakeholders to capture the outcome measures that give a view of the real value added, maintained or reduced is key to the future of healthcare for us all. The magic is getting this done operationally and not only academically.
