About
My personal story early days growing up in Roxbury Massachusetts in a family of nine. My mom died when I was 6 years old. My dad looked after the family until he lost his job and we were evicted from our home. Some of the children were looked after by our relatives. My younger brother and I were cared for by the state in foster homes. Thankfully, my dad got the family back together in this shack of a house in Roxbury. I learned at an early age that family is what life is all about.Hard work is good for you is the message we heard growing up. This kick started my career as an entrepreneur; I had a paper route, radio and tv repair business, and a snow plowing business with a 1946 jeep. During my last year of high school I joined the Marine Corp. and served as a radar technician. Following active duty, I took a job at EG&G (a Massachusetts company founded by three MIT scientists) as an entry-level production technician. The “E” in EG&G was Dr. Harold E Edgerton, a pioneer of strobe technology, was also my mentor. While at EG&G, I entered Northeastern University as an electrical engineering student.Subsequent to graduating, XENON was founded on a shoestring budget in the basement of a family member’s home in Quincy, Mass. The key flash lamp application at that time was pumping Ruby Lasers. The challenge was how to transfer a high amount of light energy in a short period of time (1 millisecond) to the Ruby Crystal. There was only one-way, Pulsed Light, delivering lots of photons fast.In our third year of business, we were contacted by MIT to build a commercial flash photolysis system. After delivering MIT’s system we received orders from key photo chemical R&D labs world-wide (Columbia University, etc.). It became clear that additional applications to advance current technology were on the horizon. And it was done in the form of UV curing. In the early 70’s UV curing emerged from the research and offered the industry a better production option. It took time for industry to embrace this new method of curing due to investments already made with existing technologies. During the 1980’s, and beyond, new products such as optical discs, fiber optics, solar simulators, and medical devices, stimulated the adoption of pulsed UV light technology.Other challenges solved with pulsed light included: hardening semiconductor photoresist, tall tower beacon lights, transatlantic fiber optic cables, optical disc production, solar panel testing, space sanitization, recycling coffee cups, food packaging, enhancing mushrooms with vitamin D and combating COVID.
