Lutz Heide

Prof. Dr. Lutz Heide conducts teaching and research in the field of pharmaceutical global health at the University of Tübingen. His research focuses on the problem of substandard and falsified medicines, the availability and prices of medicines, and the challenges of health supply chain management in low- and middle-income countries. He studied pharmacy and obtained a PhD in Pharmaceutical Biology at the University of Münster, Germany. Subsequently, he worked for three years at the Ministry of Health in Somalia, where he managed the supply of essential medicines for primary health care in refugee camps. After a postdoctoral fellowship at Kyoto University in Japan, he followed an academic career at the Universitis of Bonn and Freiburg, Germany. In 1994, he was appointed full professor at the Pharmaceutical Institute of the University of Tübingen, Germany. He carried out research in pharmaceutical biotechnology, and in antibiotic discovery with genetic and genomic methods. On leave from the University of Tübingen and under a contract with the German GIZ/CIM, he worked for two years (2014/2015) at the Pharmacy Department of the College of Medicine in Blantyre, Malawi. There he taught Drug & Medical Supplies Management and started his research on the quality of essential medicines in low- and middle-income countries.
