Mark Clark has over 30 years' experience working on crisis desks in both the commercial world and UK government transport and health departments. Between 1997 and 2011 he headed the UK Maritime & Coastguard Agency’s public relations and media department. During this time he handled many high profile shipping incidents including the losses of the M/V Napoli, M/V Green Lily and M/V Prince. At sea incidents included the M/V Kukawa, M/V Dole America and M/T Atlantic ProsperityAt Defence contractor QinetiQ he was responsible for maintaining a communications risk register to ensure a systematic approach to reputational issues, monitoring traditional and digital media so that it is up-to-date. He was also spokesman for QinetiQ responsible for maintaining a crisis communications plan..Challenges included widespread industrial action in one of the four national emergency services. Briefed the Secretary of State for Transport and shipping ministers on communications strategies in the wider context of discontent with the Government’s pay policy in the public sector. My role was to maintain public confidence in the premier maritime emergency service.Supported the Agency’s National Contingency Plan after the grounding of the MSC Napoli off the coast of Devon in January 2007, and chairing the multi agency, multi council media response cell.Successfully managed the MCAs media response and public information during many high profile incidentsSpecialties: Taking full part in the Cabinet Office’s regional media Emergency Forum throughout the country.Advised on the strategic direction and implementation of the reorganisation of Operations Rooms, including 5 closures out of a total of 23 stations in 1997/1998.Prior member of the Cabinet Office’s Warning and Informing Steering Group.Marketing the MCA to a global shipping audience and potential markets for UK shipping expertise
