Matthew Venz

I am passionate about software engineering and enjoy solving problems and being challenged in my work. I take pride in my work and always try to find the best solution to any problem. I care about the details and I believe it’s worth taking the time to do a job well because a good solution will be easier to use and understand and requires less work to maintain and improve in the long term. I have worked in a variety of different roles and with a lot of different technologies and I have proven my ability to adapt and learn quickly in order to make the most of whatever tools I’m working with. I am interested in working in an environment that will challenge my problem solving ability and allow me to work with others to develop high quality solutions. I have been working with Scala and functional programming since 2010 and strongly believe that functional programming and Scala in particular help produce more robust and correct code and also enable solving problems that would be a lot more difficult in other languages. I’ve recently been working with Shapeless and type level programming and see enormous potential especially in the area of data processing work. I’m also a strong advocate for event stream processing and events as the source of truth. Outside of work I enjoy travelling and photography as well as playing video games when I have time. I’ve had the privilege of working and living in Japan for 4 years and experiencing another culture and a very different work environment. The experience has helped me to further improve my communication and teamwork skills as well as giving insight into the benefits and drawbacks of different ways of working.
