The Maputo Accord for Peace and Reconciliation was signed in August 2019 by the President of Mozambique, Filipe Jacinto Nyusi, and the country’s main opposition leader, Ossufo Momade. Witnessed by national and foreign dignitaries at the capital's Peace Square, the signing of the accord brought an end to decades of violence in the country. “The peace process is entering an important phase which sees the culmination of the efforts that led to the signing of the Maputo Accord and the continuation of negotiation and implementation,” said Ambassador Mirko Manzoni, Personal Envoy of the Secretary-General for Mozambique and Head of the Mozambique Peace Secretariat. Mirko Manzoni is an Ambassador with more than 20 years’ experience in the diplomatic and humanitarian fields. He is a native of Lugano, Switzerland. He has a master’s degree in architecture from the Swiss Federal Institutes of Technology – EPFL and an MBA focused on Management and Corporate Finance from HEC Lausanne - School of Business. From 2014 until 2019, he has been Ambassador of Switzerland to Mozambique, where since 2016 he has been actively involved in the peace process. He is a skilled mediator and negotiator with excellent management capabilities. He is natural leader with a proven track record of managing teams in complex environments. United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres announced on 8 July 2019 the appointment of Mirko Manzoni of Switzerland as his Personal Envoy for Mozambique.
