About
I am a lead data scientist working at the Centre for Intelligent Power with Eaton. Prior to this role, I was working on a PhD in statistics in the OxWaSP programme, a joint PhD in the universities of Oxford and Warwick. I spent a year of my PhD researching in The Alan Turing Institute, the UK's data science and AI institute. I have an extensive background in scientific communication. In my free time I run a data science blog (www.nathancunn.com); my research has been covered in: newspapers such as The Times, and The Washington Post; online outlets such as AV Club, and Nerdist; and I have been interviewed by Tim Harford for BBC's More Or Less, as well as on TV for BBC's Midlands Today. My PhD research focused on developing unsupervised machine learning algorithms for identifying subgroups among patients with cancer. The approach makes use of methods in Markov chain Monte Carlo. I have implemented the algorithm in the programming languages Julia and R. I also have experience using Python. I previously worked as a data analyst and research assistant in the Economic and Social Research Institute (ESRI), Dublin and have worked as a data scientist on a joint project between The Alan Turing Institute and NHS Scotland. In both cases, I was involved in building predictive models using electronic patient records.
