Nicolas completed his Bachelor of Arts at Wheaton College in Norton, MA in 2016 where he won the Edna D. Parks Prize in music theory alongside the Concerto-Aria Competition. Receiving his degree in music with a minor in international politics, Nicolas pursued extensive self-study in aesthetic philosophy, art history, and music criticism. Sterner gave his conducting debut at the age of 17. He is a self-taught conductor. During his collegiate studies, Nicolas was a cellist in the critically acclaimed Boston Philharmonic Youth Orchestra. Sterner has been very fortunate to have performed in halls nationally and around the world, including Het Concertgebouw (Amsterdam), De Doelen (Rotterdam), and St. Bavo Cathedral (Haarlem), Carnegie Hall (New York City), Symphony Hall (Boston), Sanders Theatre (Cambridge), Paine Hall (Harvard), Lotte Lehmann Hall (UCSB), and Hahn Hall (Music Academy of the West). Residing in Cambridge, MA, Nicolas’ recent musical engagements include performances as the Collaborative Director and Conductor of the Chromos Collaborative, organizing independent chamber music concerts in the Boston area, performances and masterclasses (with Colin Carr) at the Maine Chamber Music Seminar, conducting the Ip Piano School concerto concert, performing in the world premiere of the Baverstam Cello Concerto, as well as contributions to the Boston Musical Intelligencer. In the summer of 2019, Nicolas traveled extensively throughout Europe, pursuing self-study in art history, culture, as well as attending the Berlin Workshop for Conductors at the UdK Berlin and publishing two reviews of concerts in Berlin at the Brandenburg Tor (Brandenburg Gate) and Salzburger Festspiele (Salzburg Festival).
