Olivia Smedley

Previously worked as a space scientist at Goonhilly Earth Station on the Lizard Peninsula in Cornwall. Involved with the upgrade of the GHY6 antenna for deep space operations, working alongside the European Space Agency. Also, worked on the development of the Space AI Institute. Recently completed a master’s degree in Space Science and Technology with the Open University where the thesis involved using machine learning techniques to analyse satellite data. Previously gained an undergraduate degree in Physics with Astrophysics at Bristol University, acquiring problem solving skills and the ability to pay attention to detail. As a qualified secondary school teacher, experience in the education industry has allowed development of important transferable skills, such as communication and adaptability.Skills include Python, C++ and JavaScript programming languages and use of Linux, macOS and Windows operating systems. Experience with software tools such as Google Earth Engine and QGIS. Also experience of writing device drivers in Dataminer using XML and C#.
