I believe that the key to successful projects is a team of great all rounders in a trusting work environment. My first role is to ensure that my team has the skills required to accomplish the cross-functional activities of a project. This can be hard skills for technical tasks or soft skills that allow them to work with others in a collaborative way. As a manager, it is my responsibility to train the team. As Andy Grove wrote in High Output Management, “training is, quite simply, one of the highest leverage activities a manager can perform” to increase team output. My second role is to create a trusting environment where everyone, regardless of their experience, is allowed to express their ideas and opinions freely and contribute towards the team's objectives. This means sharing common values such as transparency and respect for others. This setting allows each member of the team to commit to a collective goal and add value for our clients.
