Rick Streiffer, Professor of Family Medicine, is immediate past Dean of the College of Community Health Sciences at the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa. He started in that role in March 2012 & stepped down in August 2018 to resume a faculty role and pursue things that he wanted to do, rather than what he "had" to do (!). Prior to coming to UA as Dean, he was the founding Chairman and Professor in the Department of Family and Community Medicine at Tulane between 1998 to 2012. A native of New Orleans, graduate of Tulane University, LSU School of Medicine in NO, and the Family Medicine Residency at the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa, Dr. Streiffer has taught in practice, medical school and residency settings for over 35 years. He has been the Project Director on several federal training grants with a focus on primary care education and development of rural physician workforce, and is Project Director for a grant received from the Josiah Macy, Jr. Foundation to develop the Tulane Rural Immersion Program (TRIP). Dr. Streiffer has maintained an active primary care practice over his career, and holds a Certificate of Added Qualification in Geriatrics. He has been active in state and national leadership roles in the Society of Teachers of Family Medicine and the American and Louisiana Academies of Family Physicians, was appointed to the Louisiana Health Works Commission by the Governor in 2009, and served as the co-chair of the Governor’s Interagency Task Force on the Future of Family Medicine in Louisiana since 2004. Rick is married to NOLA native Ann, a former nurse practitioner and chocolatier, and together they have 3 grown kids, 8 grandkids & 2 labs.
