I'm an intellectual property attorney interested in helping clients understand the real value of patents, trade secrets, and trademarks. Many in the field have staked out positions that patents should be, essentially, worthless, or that patent holders should be able to extract cost-of-litigation settlements for non-meritorious claims. I disagree with both. I help clients understand, protect, and extract the value of their innovations and brands. I also help clients mitigate the threat of infringement allegations. So, my practice encompasses litigation, licensing, corporate law, and tax. I have been involved in some of the most successful patent monetization and divesture programs of the last five years, and I don't monetize assets I'm not prepared to stand behind at trial. Having actively participated in the patent marketplace and monetized a number of portfolios, I bring an understanding of the market value of portfolios, as well as an understanding of the best ways to unlock that value. On behalf of patent owners and those interested in investing in monetization, I value large portfolios, mine them for the most compelling assets, negotiate over the acquisition or divesture of those assets, and create and implement a plan to license or enforce them. Clients rely on me to answer difficult questions, like what is the value of a standard-essential patent portfolio, or what are the probable returns on investment in a program against an industry that has never been targeted before. I also help connect innovators and investors and create assertion vehicles that share the risk of assertion fairly. I am admitted to practice in Massachusetts and before the USPTO. Before law school, I was a software engineer at various startups and established companies. Some other stuff you might not guess about me: I did stand-up in Boston for years, I came out with 4 wacky Christmas albums, and one of my daughters is named after a Game of Thrones character (my wife's call!).
