Ryan Khan

Currently interning as a Research Associate at the Integrated Research Literacy Group. My work at this lab focuses on researching and writing scientific papers (case reports, narrative reviews, systematic reviews, meta-analyses) around novel psychedelic interventions for mental health indications. BSc (Industrial) Human Physiology graduate from the University of Leeds. Awarded the BMS Award for achieving the highest mark in Level 2 Human Physiology scoring an average grade of 75%. Returned to Leeds in September 2021 to complete the final year of my degree, following an industrial placement in Medical Writing and Pharmacovigilance at Cancer Research UK. My final year undergraduate studies were tailored towards mental health and novel psychiatric treatments. My critical review Capstone project (dissertation) addressed the following hypothesis: 'The psychedelic brew ayahuasca exhibits antidepressants properties and may be a suitable psychotherapeutic tool in the treatment of depression'. I am currently in the process of modifying this piece and hoping to get it published in 2023. I currently hold voluntary roles at the Science Entrepreneur Club (Content Writer), Drug Science (Project Twenty21 Ambassador), WEL.Safe (Welfare volunteer) and have previously held voluntary roles at Students for Global Health (National Director of Communications), Students for Sensible Drug Policy (President of University of Leeds society) and Patient Led Engagement for Access (Research Co-ordinator). I completed a 12-month industrial placement at Cancer Research UK's Centre for Drug Development where I worked between the Medical Writing and Pharmacovigilance departments. This gave me an invaluable insight into the regulation, compliance and logistical management of phase I and II clinical trials and deeply enhanced my understanding of drug development. I have extensive experience working with team, having completed Bronze, Silver and Gold of the Duke of Edinburgh programs and the National/International Citizen Service volunteer programs. Mentoring and tutoring through programs including Peer Assisted Study Support (Univerisity of Leeds), IFMSA training and The Tutor Trust have also developed my public speaking, communication and organisational skills which are some of my major strengths. Personal interests include psychedelics, novel mental health treatments, plant-based medicines, drug policy reform, alternative therapies, holistic health, mental health, public health, global health, conservation, climbing, cycling, skating.
