Stephen Bretherick

Steve was born into the broadcast industry from a young age he was slave labour to his father the founder of Telemedia. As a teenager he assisted his father with transmitter and broadcast installations in Lesotho and Botswana. He tried to escape the child labour by moving to Cape Town to study electrical engineering at UCT, but quicky became the Cape Town office to Telemedia while studying. At the time he was responsible for the contribution links for occasional use broadcasts from the Western Cape for MNET in addition to working at the Parliament TV channel as a final control operator. After qualifying as an electrical engineer Steve re-joined Telemedia in Johannesburg and spent most of his time travelling South Africa and the rest of the African continent providing SNG services for sporting events. His experience with digital systems drew him closer to the Telemedia Teleport where he moved through all the departments, including SNG(outside broadcast), Studio engineering, occasional use operations and Teleport Manager. In 2014, 14years later he shared an office with his father where they jointly ran Telemedia. Steve began leading Telemedia solo in 2017 when his father retired. Steve currently heads up Telemedia in the same fashion his father taught him. Outside of Telemedia, Steve’s passion is climbing. If work was not sending him to away from home, climbing drew him out. Steve has competed nationally in sport climbing competitions and completed some “big mountain” adventures. In his early 30s Steve had completed a fair number of the iconic hard routes in South Africa, and also completed a 5day accent of the Nose and other routes in Yosemite(California). Steve has summit Mt Kenya twice and has climbed all over the world. Climbing introduced him to his wife with whom he shares 2 children. Steve and his family love the outdoors, watching tv for entertainment is frowned upon, but monitoring the TV for technical problems is something he and his children were born into.
