Todd Griffith

Dr. Griffith is the co-founder and CTO of Discovery Machine®, Inc. He is responsible for acquiring grant funding, coordinating knowledge engineering efforts, and managing the research and development of Discovery Machine’s core knowledge acquisition products. He has been working in the area of intelligent systems research for twenty five years, and has published numerous papers in the areas of cognitive science, human-computer interaction, and intelligent systems. He has presented regularly at conferences and meetings since 1996. Dr. Griffith’s research is focused on neuro-symbolic approaches to mental models. His research in Applied Artificial Intelligence (AI) Engineering has led to software applications for capturing subject matter expertise and deploying it in virtual instructors, intelligent teammates, and decision-support agents. In applying these agents, Dr. Griffith created the Multi-level Universal Specification for Intelligent Constructs (MUSIC) which the Discovery Machine team has developed as an open standard enabling AI systems to integrate seamlessly with numerous simulation systems. Dr. Griffith introduced the idea of virtual instructors to the DoD and has guided the underlying development of several virtual instructors currently transitioning to training programs, including the Virtual Instructor Pilot Exercise Referee (VIPER®), the Mentor Adaptive Nonlinear Training Intelligent System (MANTIS™), Sensor Coach for Optimizing RPA Pilots Intelligent Operational Needs (SCORPION™), and Squad Cognitive Instructor for Performance of Intelligent OODA (SCIPIO™).
