About

Tom Livingston, the principal of Livingston Engineering Associates LTD, designs complete buildings, from institutional to commercial to residential. He also performs the Structural analysis and design, and is a building scientist. These three design elements - building shape, underlying structure, and heat & moisture flows - are done by Tom as an integrated and holistic process. Tom then works with select Mechanical, Electrical, and Geotechnical Engineer Associates as needed to produce the final set of drawings and specifications that are ready for tender. Livingston Engineering also can take care of the contract administration services, including inspections and final commissioning. Tom believes that a building must also be aesthetically appealing in order to be successful, and he strives to create spaces and building facades that people will love -from outside to in. Tom is skilled as a solar designer, having won national and provincial awards for his passive solar and energy-efficient buildings. He uses glazing in the same way that traditional designers use furnaces. He has written software (32 bit processor, black screen) that can calculate the amount of solar energy coming through various kinds (and up to four layers) of glazing and low-e coatings (at various latitudes, tilt angles, and orientation), and thus he can understand how much of the sun's heat can be expected on an hourly basis. His results are calculated using each of the three standard sky models. Tom also designs Northern wastewater treatment lagoons and solid waste management facilities, as well as Northern roads and subdivisions. Although Tom no longer lives in Canada's North, he has had 16 years' experience living and working in both Nunavut and NWT, and understands the design challenges there. Livingston Engineering Associates LTD is a flexible, innovative, and green engineering firm that offers cost-effective and appropriate solutions. We are fully licensed to practice in Nova Scotia, Northwest Territories, and Nunavut - and, when the need arises, can become licensed to practice in other provinces and territories in Canada.
