About

After serving in the Merchant Navy as a Navigating Officer, I swallowed the anchor and worked as a manager for Stylo Shoes. I returned to full time education taking a number of higher education qualifications followed by 2 year course in Careers Guidance, a full time course of one year year at Nottingham Trent University and one year practical work on the job. I managed the Hull Careers Service which was part of the Humberside Careers Service and was responsible for over 100 professional Careers Advisors and support staff for many years, and took early retirement in 2005 to allow me to concentrate on new challenges. I was the Deputy and then Chairman of the Cultural Services Committee for Hull City Council from 1985 until 1995 during which period, I developed many new museums and other cultural assets during my years of tenure, which has been recognised as the largest expansion of cultural facilities for the city in over 100 years.I was also one of the eight original Development Board Members who helped design and build the Kingston Communications Stadium in Kingston upon Hull. I have spent most of my working life responsible for managing large numbers of staff at every level in both the public and private sectors. I was honoured by becoming a Deputy Lieutenant for the East Riding of Yorkshire and Kingston upon Hull in 2008 and made a Honorary Alderman for the city in 2011.
