Clinical research focus on biology of lung carcinogenesis, salvage surgery of lung metastases, chemoprevention of smoking-induced cancers, and early detection of lung cancer. In 1991 he launched the International Registry of Lung Metastases. He has conducted as P.I. seven randomized clinical trials that recruited over 4,000 high risk individuals and 4,000 patients.Author of 319 papers on Journals with Impact Factor (total IF 1221). H-index: 47.From 1982 to 1988 acted as Executive Director of the European School of Oncology (ESO), from 1991 to 1994 as Secretary General of the International Association for the Study of Lung Cancer (IASLC). From 2001 to 2014 was Associate Editor of the Journal of the National Cancer Institute. Since October 2014 he is Editor in Chief of Tumori Journal.
