27 followers 22/08/2021 Technology: Society’s Curse, or a Silver Lining? by Liam Velani Technological growth is our fate. It is not going anywhere. We use phones. We use the TV. We use the computer. But this is only the start. Most of our technological usage is actually hidden from plain sight. Imagine the technology that went into the development of the NHS Track and Trace system. What about the infrastructure used to give us broadband? Technology is everywhere, and it isn’t going anywhere. Now imagine the benefits of technology. It has allowed us to live in a safer world. We can quickly get medical help should we need it. We are able to protect ourselves during a time of Global Pandemic. On the other hand, there are a number of weaknesses. The bad side of technology can do a lot of harm. We are more susceptible to cyber attacks and hacking. Vulnerable individuals are threatened by online attacks and grooming. Technology has also inflicted damage on pre-existing societal issues. School inequality has grown as a result of the lack of access to laptops, for many, during the recent lockdowns. However, it is important to underline this. What technology has undeniably done is allow us to know more. It has facilitated integral, fast communication across the world. What is going on in the Middle East can be relayed back to the West in a matter of seconds or minutes. That is going to help us. Help those at most risk. Help to create a more hospitable, and safer, community for us to live in.
