I am a strong advocate for equality, diversity, and inclusion in Swedish healthcare and inform about the health disparities through education and regularly share topics about racial disparities in healthcare and biases in healthcare on my Instagram (@min_melanin). I regularly lecture to nursing students and healthcare professionals about skin assessment in patients with melanin-rich skin, as well as equality and racism in health care. I have published an article about skin assessment for wounds on people with melanin-rich skin in the Swedish Journal of Wound Care. My work has been written about in the Swedish Association of Health Professionals' monthly magazine, Vårdfokus, as well as in national and local Swedish news. In 2021, I was honored with the Womenisa Award for my work addressing health inequalities and calling attention to the lack of melanin-rich skin in medical textbooks. The electronic medical record for Malmö stad has been updated to include melanin-rich skin in the documentation for skin assessments. I have also been involved in updating Region Skåne's electronic medical record to include melanin-rich skin. Skin assessment for wounds on people with melanin-rich skin in the Handbook of Healthcare is now included (Vårdhandboken). I have introduced Sweden's first healthcare simulation training with darker skin tones. My work is supported by international collaborations with dermatologists.
